2008-2009 Concerto Competition

The Moore Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducting its second annual Concerto Competition for students of Moore County. Three winners will be awarded up to $250 each and be offered the opportunity to perform as a soloist in the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra’s Spring Concert. The two winners will be selected from string students and band students.

Applicants must be current students in public, private, or home schools in Moore County and not have reached the age of 21 by December 31, 2008. Applicants will prepare one movement of a concerto for evaluation on December 8, 2008 by a panel of Moore Philharmonic board members and selected professional musicians from Moore County. The winners will be announced at the 2008 Moore Philharmonic OrchestraHoliday Concert.
 
Eligibility
- Students must currently be enrolled in a public, private, or registered home school of Moore County
- Students must be passing ALL current classes at school of choice.
- Students must be a resident of Moore County

Application/Audition
- Students must submit application with required registration fee no later than
  November 2, 2008. Registration shall be $25 per student. Additional household family
   members will be $5 each.
- Guidelines will be provided for acceptable concerto material or students will be
   provided a selection of concerti from which to choose.
- Concerti must be available in print for orchestra and fit the instrumentation of the
   current Moore Philharmonic. Solos should be memorized.
- Auditions will be scheduled for completion no later than one week prior to the Moore
   Philharmonic Winter Concert.
- Students must be available for the Moore Philharmonic Spring Concert

Selection Process
- Students will be judged by a panel of adults consisting of the Moore Philharmonic
   music director, the Moore Philharmonic president or appointed substitute, the Moore
   Philharmonic Vice-President, one selected string specialist, and one selected band
   specialist. No judge may be directly related to any applicant.
- Judges will use a rating system based on the NYSSMA system or as established by
   the Board of the Moore Philharmonic
- The students with highest combined total from each area will be selected to perform
   with the Moore Philharmonic at the Spring Concert
- In the event that any winning concert selection is considered inappropriate for the
   Moore Philharmonic Orchestra, the music director and student will select an
   alternate concerto.

Winners must be able to attend 3 rehearsals with the Moore Philharmonic
